City & Private Sector Partnership
The Equestrian, the colossal statue of the rearing horse and rider cost over two million dollars, of which 40% was from the City of El Paso and 60% from the private sector and philanthropic foundations. The city's generously allocated $700,000 (airport revenue funds, not tax monies) from the Department of Aviation and provided the monument site near the airport entrance.
The enthusiastic private sector generously donated over 1.3 million dollars. The XII Travelers Board, which spearheads project fund-raising and promotion, is grateful for the support from the city and
the many sponsors, including the public. Moreover, in/kind contributions and the sale of project related art generated over $250,000. The major contributors will be permanenly recognized on the Donor Acknowledgement Plaque on the statue's base.
The creation of the world's largest equestrian bronze, 10-years in the making, was result of a shared vision, and national and international support. The time and money invested in a colossal sculpture of this exceptional quality and great scale were minimal, while the benefits to El Paso will long endure.
Robert E. & Evelyn McKee Foundation
The McKee Foundation of El Paso, the major private donor, generously contributed $400,000 to the Don Juan de Oñate statue. The foundation demonstrated the steadfast vision to sustain and nuture its creation. It is therefore appropriate that the City of El Paso and the XII Travelers Board and sculptors dedicate the monument to the memory of Robert E. and Evelyn Mckee whose generous legacy of support to civic programs and the arts continue to benefit El Paso and the region.
