The statue does represent the meeting and intertwining of indigenous and European peoples here in El Paso. ---- Could we consider a more neutral name for our statue? [next paragraph] Don Juan de Oñate led the first wave of Hispanic colonists to settle this region more than 400 years ago and 22 years before the landing at Plymouth Rock. Oñate’s importance in our history was recognized by artist Tom Lean in another great work of art, “The Twelve Travelers,” more than 60 years ago.” [next paragraph] Oñate’s influence on the formation of the Southwest and the nation is undeniable, and to name the monument “The Equestrian” is to deny a significant part of our history. [next paragraph] We respectfully request that the City of El Paso act upon this matter so that the statue can be named in time for the official unveiling on April 21. Jack Niland, president, El Paso County Historical Society. [end of transcript].

2-25-07 El Paso Times (Newspaper)
“We must not simply ignore Oñate’s legacy” By Sheldon Hall, Guest columnist, El Paso Times, Sunday, Feb. 25, 2007, Opinion Page 13B [entire editorial transcript:] “Most El Pasoans believe that we should exercise horse sense concerning of the unresolved dilemma of naming the colossal bronze that was installed at the airport last October because conferring a meaningless title, “The Equestrian,” accomplishes nothing. Ironically, the name change promotes the identity of Don Juan de Oñate, the founder of the Camino Real, who introduced Spanish settlement and the horse to the American Southwest. The city originally commissioned the sculpture as “Oñate” and not as an anonymous horseman. The solution is obvious. Let’s recognize the man and his legacy, both positive and negative. I suggest, that affixed to the base, should be the title “Don Juan de Oñate, Founder of the Camino Real and the man who name our city, 1598.” The Royal Road that connects our city and nation to Mexico and to our past and future also deserves recognition. The airport is an extension of that historic artery of travel, commerce and ideas – now a pathway to the skies.” [next paragraph] “Controversy has long been associated with large-scale monuments. Bert Kubli, former Director of Art in Public Places (National Endowment for the Arts), remarked: “If no one debates it, why have it? The Process and the debate are very much a part of public art itself.” The Statue of Liberty was criticized because a woman was represented as the giver of liberty and justice. A sculpture of a female equestrian, straddling a horse, would have sparked controversy in El Paso in the 1890’s when city law forbade women to mount horses, while wearing splits or breaches.” [next paragraph] “The Buffalo Bill equestrian bronze at the 1936 Texas Centenary in Dallas, created outrage when critics sought an injunction to prevent its installation.” [next paragraph] “However, the judge, not fooled by the political correctness, denied the demand, and the work was erected on the centennial grounds. Buffalo Bill’s controversial legacy was that during the Civil War he had fought for the Union and not for the Confederacy.” [next paragraph] “The creation of the Washington Monument took nearly a century to complete and was continually the target of protest. Work was abruptly halted when Pope Pius IX donated a marble block for its building, a gift, which bigots derided as the “Papist Stone.” [next paragraph] “In the 1930’s, the Jefferson Memorial precipitated the “Cherry Tree Rebellion” because trees were removed for its construction.” [next paragraph] “Despite the pope’s gift, the cutting of trees and a myriad of other controversies, the Washington and Jefferson memorials became a reality.” [next paragraph] “George Washington, known as the villager destroyer by the Iroquois Indians, was also a slaveholder, and yet he is an integral part of our nation’s heritage.” [next paragraph] “There’s reason to debate and to examine the past, but political correctness should not become a tool of censorship. It is far better to tell the whole story, whether it be Don Juan de Oñate or George Washington.” [next paragraph] “I suggest the Oñate’s name be recognized on the monument’s base and that the story of his legacy be objectively told on a bilingual plaque.” [end of editorial] “(El Pasoan Sheldon Hall has spent much time and effort in preserving El Paso’s heritage).”

"Aztec cruelty" (title), Letter to the Editor, from Arnold Olivo, West El Paso. El Paso Times, Sunday, Feb. 25, 2007, Opinion Page 12B. [partial transcript of text:] "I believe the statue of The Equestrian, by sculptor John Houser, should revert to its original name of the Spanish explorer Juan de Oñate." --- "Juan de Oñate was chastised and returned to Spain for his acts. Under this same note of cruelty, we have an Aztec Calendar monument in the plaza across from the County Courthouse. It represents the Aztec culture, who themselves were cruel to their captives or prisoners during battle, as well." [next paragraph] "Historians have it better documented than I could catalog these acts, yet we do not see an opposition of the city's citizens who oppose the name of Juan de Oñate to these historical events of the Aztec culture."

[Editorial by Joe Muench] "What's with the International eyesore" --- "Finally, is the city going to cut down some pine trees so we can actually see "The Equestrian" out at the airport?" [next paragraph] "We messed that one up, all right. First the three-story statue came a decade after its due date; then we chickened out on calling by its original name, Don Juan de Oñate; and now it's stuck in the middle of the trees." [next paragraph] "The best view is when leaving the airport. Take a real, quick look to the left just after the Hilton. Make it a real quick look, though because there's fast-moving traffic merging on your right ... and it's flying right atcha. Alas and alack. Another statue controversy.
