Equestrian Dedication Date

The World's Largest Equestrian Bronze to be dedicated on Saturday, April 21, 2007 at the International Airport, El Paso, Texas. The statue, nearly 10-years in the making, was installed on October 31, 2006.

Colossal Heads
 

Original Works of Art: The colossal heads of Don Juan de Oñate and his Andalusian Horse were created by sculptor John Sherrill Houser as original sculptures from the full-scale monument. They are independent works of art for indoor/outdoor display. The large heads and other project related art are available for purchase (with a tax-deducation) from the XII Travelers non-profit organization. For information, prices and brochures - phone (915) 533-6448 or (505) 982-9077. Sale of the colossal heads excludes bases; the sculptor will voluntarily consult with the purchaser about base design and construction. Theese large sculptures from the monument are orignal works of art and are not fragments. They are stand-alone works of art.

 

“First Horse of the Camino Real, 1598": The colossal horse head is 12-feet high, 8-long and 3-feet, two inches wide It is available in a limited edition of 7 in bronze, refined concrete/marble and in fiberglass (base not included). The sculptor created this original sculpture is a separate work of art and not a fragment from the monument. The large bronze horse head (fragment from the monument) was exhbited (through Oct. 2, 2005) on the Plaza near the entrance of the Museum of Fine Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. This work was featured in ARTTALK, Jan. 2006.

 

“First Horseman of the Southwest, 1598”: The 8-foot high sculpture (colossal head of Don Juan de Oñate) is available in a limited edition of 7 in bronze, refined concrete/marble and in fiberglass (base not included).The bas-relief Renaissance design on the helmet was inspired by a 16th century helmet that was discovered in 1947 in a lava cave in northern New Mexico. It contains the incised image of the Virgin Mary on one side and kneeling conquistador (helmet at his side) before the crucified Christ on the other. The ancient helmet is on public display in the Palace of the Governors in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

 

Exhibition/Media Coverage: The colossal heads were exhibited in San Antonio, Fort Worth, and El Paso, Texas and Santa Fe, New Mexico, and were featured in the following magazines - Southwest Art, Art of the West, ARTTALK, Horse of Kings, Andalusian (the Spanish and Portuguese Horse), Western Horseman, Conquistador - The World of Spanish Horses, The P.R.E. Horse (Pura Raza Española), Cowboys and Indians, Equine Images, and Philanthropy in Texas.
